Description
“To you I am neither man nor woman—I come before you as an author only. It is the sole standard by which you have a right to judge me—the sole ground on which I accept your judgement.”
—From a letter by Charlotte Brontë to her editor, W.S. Williams, August 1849
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, we honor her alongside the remarkable women novelists of the 18th and 19th centuries who reshaped literature and claimed their place in history. Like Austen, many took bold and unconventional routes to reach their readers: some adopted male or deliberately ambiguous pseudonyms; others first published anonymously before stepping proudly into the public eye. We’ll linger over early editions and manuscripts by Austen and wander through materials related to Frances Burney, Mary Shelley, Charlotte Brontë, and George Eliot, tracing the bold and winding paths through which these visionary women carried their voices into the world.
