Description

Few writers of the 19th century fused literature, religion, and politics quite as poetically as Victor Hugo. He's best known as the writer of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misérables, but Victor Hugo was also a poet, a playwright, and a painter who was squarely in the Romantic period but verged on surrealism. His life story reads as a novel, and his philanthropic and philandering tendencies were often at odds. He was constantly searching for a higher power, and sometimes he was the higher power. Hugo was many things, as an admirer once said, "He is divine, he is infernal, he is wise, he is foolish, he is Pope, he is king, he is man, woman, painter, poet, sculptor. He is everything." Join us to look at the Rosenbach's Hugo collection and related literary forces including Shakespeare, Dickens, and Flaubert.
