Description

For centuries, the printing press has helped ordinary people influence their government, society, and culture. Printing has contributed to the spread of ideas critical for life in a thriving republic.

In this hands-on printing workshop, you will use a 19th century iron handpress to create your own, personal copies of U.S. founding documents–such as Common Sense and the Federalist Papers. The workshop will be accompanied by a discussion of how print culture has served as a tool of change and given voice to the people, with examples from the Rosenbach collection.

About the Instructor

Bryn Michelson-Ziegler is Associate Curator & Manager of Public Programs at the Rosenbach Museum & Library and maintains an active artistic practice. She holds an MFA from University of the Arts and utilizes her book arts practice, which encompasses everything from hand-papermaking and traditional letterpress typesetting to risograph zines, to offer Rosenbach guests exciting material insight into our collections.

This program is part of “The People’s Friend: Civic Dialogues at the Rosenbach.” As the United States reckons with civic divisions, the Rosenbach is doing its part to create opportunities to learn, grow, and heal together. In this Semiquincentenniel year, “The People’s Friend: Civic Dialogues at the Rosenbach” invites members of our community to learn about history and build a bright future, together.
