Creature Comforts: Collecting Natural History at the Rosenbach
The Rosenbach Museum and Library, located near Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, will be offering tours of this exhibition on Natural History especially for middle and high school students.
This exhibition displays some of the most stunning natural history illustrations in the Rosenbach collections, along with historical documents and decorative arts that document the history of natural history in America. Students will take a close look at the debate between the Comte de Buffon, the world-renowned18th century French naturalist and Thomas Jefferson. Buffon insisted that due to a lack of resources in the Americas, people and animals born here were smaller than their European counterparts. Students will also be introduced to the Modernist poet Marianne Moore and the way in which nature inspired her poetry. Tours will also include a contour drawing exercise where students will learn the basics of drawing from nature.
This tour is especially applicable to art, history, and language arts classes.
Tours for Schools: Tours will run from 10 to 11:30 am and will be offered Tuesday through Friday from November 15 to January 20.
Cost: $5 per student (No charge for teachers and chaperones)
