A Ceremony Honoring the Gratzes
Commemorate the heritage of the Gratz family, best remembered for their dedication to public service, patriotism, and philanthropy in Philadelphia. A major center for Gratz-related collections, we are pleased to officially welcome three new additions to its collections, including portraits of Rebecca, her brother Joseph, and Benjamin Gratz’s wife Maria Cecil Gist.
As part of our celebration, the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry will be present to honor Joseph Gratz, who served with the unit during the War of 1812. First organized in 1774, the First Troop is the oldest military unit in continuous existence in the United States. Now part of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, the Troop has deployed to Bosnia, Egypt and Iraq; later this year the Troop will again deploy for 12 months to an active theater of military operations.
The ceremony will include a birthday cake for Rebecca Gratz, and a chance to view the Gratz-related collections in the historic house.
Free event! No RSVP required.
