A World Premiere Performance by Composer-Pianist Dave Burrell with Violinist Odessa Balan

Wednesday, January 18, 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 21, 2:00-3:30 p.m. & 7:00-8:30 p.m.

World-renowned jazz pianist, and Rosenbach Musician-in-Residence Dave Burrell presents the next chapter in his Civil War sesquicentennial research project, Civilians During Wartime. The six new compositions in this concert give voice to the thoughts and feelings of the mothers, brothers, civilian spies, and runaway slaves all living in the war but rarely seeing the battle field. The tone of these compositions reflects the anxieties and fears of a population living in an unforeseeable future. Mr. Burrell dug deep into the Rosenbach’s archive to find inspiration for these bold new compositions.

The program:

   1. Legends of Auction Block Runaways

   2. Have You Seen My Son

   3. Three Way Tie

   4. One Nation

   5. Mama, I'm Still Hungry

   6. Code Name; Cheap Shot

This comission was made possible by a grant from the Helen Keeler Burke Foundation.
