The Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia has reopened its search for a Director of Development. This is a full-time position on the museum’s senior staff. Salary and benefits are negotiable.
Director of Development
Position Title: Director of Development
Reports To: Executive Director
Department: Advancement
Status: Full-time, exempt
Summary Description:
The Director of Development is the chief development officer of the Rosenbach Museum & Library. Working in close collaboration with the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director, the Advancement Department, and in cooperation with all of the museum’s staff, he or she is responsible for developing and implementing a plan to meet the goals set in the operating budget. Recent major grants from The William Penn Foundation, The Pew Charitable Trusts and others will aid the museum in this effort and help it reach a new plateau in the coming years.
The ideal Director of Development has several years of experience in non-profit development work, preferably in a collecting institution, and is well versed in the fundamentals of appeals, grants, major gifts, marketing, membership, special events, etc. He or she can juggle different projects, but still remain focused on priorities identified in the museum’s strategic plan and ensure that deadlines are met. Strong technical skills are a must, preferably including experience with the Raiser’s Edge 7 database.
The Director of Development can deftly communicate the mission of the museum for diverse audiences, and inspires Board and staff to do the same. Accordingly, the Director of Development also supervises efforts to promote the Rosenbach’s brand identity through its website, press releases, publications, and mailings.
The Director of Development serves as the main staff liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees. Through clear communication, diplomacy and organization, he or she helps the Board achieve the goals it sets.
Internally, the Director of Development supervises the museum’s Advancement Department, setting goals, timetables, and procedures, motivating staff and evaluating the Department’s performance. The Department is fortunate to have staff members with expertise in areas such as databases and appeals, special events, design and marketing. The Department works in close collaboration with the Executive Director (particularly in the realm of major gift cultivation and solicitation) and the Assistant Director, Operations, and liaises with all departments.
