Ephemera in the Maurice Sendak Collection

January 30 - August 12, 2007

The Rosenbach has only rarely displayed artwork from its Maurice Sendak ephemera collection.  Limited to projects not intended for book illustration, this exhibition shows a selection of drawings Sendak created for specialized publications such as his high school literary magazine and opera playbills, as well as the singular and personalized doodles he has given to friends over the years.  Sendak fans will see some of their favorite characters appear in book festival posters, magazine articles, book inscriptions, and advertisements for Jell-O!

The Maurice Sendak Gallery was inaugurated in April 2003 in conjunction with the Rosenbach Museum & Library's grand re-opening celebration. The Gallery is dedicated to showcasing the works and personal collections of longtime trustee and supporter Maurice Sendak.

One of the best-loved creators of contemporary children's books, Sendak has authored and illustrated 84 books in a career spanning nearly seven decades. The themes and illustrations that characterize Sendak's work have challenged the norms of children's literature over time and continue to entrance both children and adults to this day. His innovative technique and honest portrayal of childhood emotion are celebrated worldwide and have earned him several prestigious honors, including the Caldecott Book Medal (1964), the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal (1970), the National Medal of Arts (1996), a Library of Congress "Living Legend" medal (2000), and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Literature (2003).

The Rosenbach Museum Shop is the only authorized source for a wide variety of books and prints signed by Maurice Sendak, as well as an assortment of unsigned Sendak books, prints, toys and more. Visit our online shop or call 215-732-1600, x213 to learn more.
