Stories and Good Advice from Kids in the Maurice Sendak Collection
Winter, 2005-2006
Best known for his storybooks, Maurice Sendak also collaborated on many books which are essentially compilations of aphorisms, definitions, and bits of advice by and for children. His drawings range from “Dogs are to kiss people” and “A baby is so you could be the boss” to etiquette tips, useful in case you are ever invited to a spaghetti dinner with the Queen.
The Maurice Sendak Gallery was inaugurated in April
2003 in conjunction with the Rosenbach Museum & Library's grand
re-opening celebration. The Gallery is dedicated to showcasing the
works and personal collections of longtime trustee and supporter Maurice
Sendak.
One of the best-loved creators of contemporary children's books, Sendak
has authored and illustrated 84 books in a career spanning nearly seven
decades. The themes and illustrations that characterize Sendak's work
have challenged the norms of children's literature over time and continue
to entrance both children and adults to this day. His innovative technique
and honest portrayal of childhood emotion are celebrated worldwide and
have earned him several prestigious honors, including the Caldecott
Book Medal (1964), the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal (1970),
the National Medal of Arts (1996), a Library of Congress "Living
Legend" medal (2000), and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for
Literature (2003).
