Friend or Faux: Imitation and Invention from Innocent to Fraudulent November 11, 2009 – July 11, 2010; return to see newly installed objects beginning March 16, 2010!
Explore the notion of authenticity across a range of periods and media in the museum’s collections. From innocent copies of artwork made as family mementos, to illegal forgeries intended to fool even the most seasoned scholar, there are stories to be told. How do we know the difference between illegal and innocent? Who is an expert? How does a museum value each kind of copy over time, and does the marketplace value them differently? Are stories about fakes more appealing to the public than those about originals?
This exhibition will bring together approximately forty paintings, manuscripts, books, and decorative arts objects from the museum’s collections in five sections across two galleries. Visitors will be able to guide themselves through each section at their own speed with the assistance of both curatorial texts and five selected experts who enhance the discussion through audio, additional text, and three-dimensional models. To protect the objects from exposure to the environment, the objects in this exhibition will be changed and new ones will be placed on display beginning March 16. Please return to see a new selection of objects after that date! Too Many Thoughts to Chew: A Sendak Stew
