Words and Wisdom

Since 2001, the Rosenbach has been presenting Words and Wisdom: African American Literature from Slavery to the Civil Rights Movement to hundreds of students from its partner schools. Created and performed by nationally known storyteller Linda Goss and jazz musician Alfie Pollitt, Words and Wisdom highlights the contributions of African American writers of the last two centuries, including slave poet Phillis Wheatley and Harlem Renaissance master Langston Hughes. In addition to school performances, Words and Wisdom has also traveled to several community venues including the Johnson House in Germantown and the Paul Robeson House in West Philadelphia.

The Words and Wisdom project also includes a Timeline of African American Literature, and supplementary curriculum materials for teachers and students both published by the Rosenbach Museum & Library.
